Brenner Pass: Authorities study variable toll to ease traffic

Authorities in Bavaria, South Tyrol, and Trentino have launched a feasibility study to investigate the implementation of a variable toll on the Brenner Pass. The goal is to alleviate heavy traffic congestion, particularly for freight transport during peak periods, as traditional measures like night driving bans have been deemed ineffective by Bavarian Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter.

The study, which is expected to run through the end of 2026, will examine the technical, legal, and economic viability of such a system. This initiative comes amid ongoing challenges on the Brenner motorway, where construction work starting in early 2025 is expected to continue until 2030, often resulting in single-lane traffic and significant delays.

Long-term relief is anticipated from the Brenner Base Tunnel, which is projected to be operational by 2032. A major milestone was reached in late July 2026 with the breakthrough between the Italian and Austrian sides. In the interim, travelers are advised to consider alternative routes such as the Reschen Pass, the Tauern motorway, or the Timmelsjoch, though these options are also subject to congestion and construction-related closures.
