Brenner Pass infrastructure: Bridge repairs and tunnel delays
Major infrastructure projects and traffic restrictions are currently impacting the Brenner Pass connection between Austria and Italy. On the A13 Brenner motorway, renovation work on the Lueg Bridge has resulted in single-lane traffic in both directions. To manage safety during these construction phases, which are expected to continue until 2030, a section control system has been implemented. This system calculates average speeds between two points to enforce a 60 km/h limit, rather than using traditional point-based speed cameras.
Simultaneously, the Brenner Base Tunnel project aims to provide a high-speed rail alternative to the motorway, potentially reducing travel time between Innsbruck and South Tyrol to 25 minutes. While the official target for commissioning is 2032, there are concerns regarding further delays. Specifically, political decisions regarding the feeder line in the Bavarian Inntal have been repeatedly postponed in the German Bundestag, threatening the overall timeline of the trans-alpine connection.
