Brenner Pass traffic disruptions expected in 2026
Travelers using the Brenner Pass (A13) between Austria and Italy face significant traffic disruptions throughout 2026. Due to planned renovations of the Lueg Bridge in the Wipptal region, the ASFINAG motorway operator will implement single-lane traffic in many sections starting in early 2026 to reduce structural stress on the bridge.
These construction measures are expected to cause massive delays and traffic jams lasting several kilometers, particularly during peak travel periods such as weekends, public holidays, and the summer months from May to October. ASFINAG has released a traffic forecast calendar to help travelers anticipate these delays.
Additionally, the state of Tyrol has implemented a ban on transit motorists using smaller local roads to bypass highway congestion. Travelers are also reminded of changing toll regulations, as Austria will transition to a digital-only vignette system starting December 1, 2026, replacing physical stickers.
