Brenner Pass transit faces delays amid bridge repairs and tunnel construction
Travelers using the Brenner motorway (A13) between Austria and Italy face significant delays and potential multi-kilometer traffic jams throughout 2026. The disruptions are primarily due to the renovation of the Luegbrücke in the Wipptal region, south of Innsbruck. To ensure structural stability, ASFINAG will implement single-lane traffic in many sections starting in early 2026.
To manage the congestion, the state of Tyrol has imposed a driving ban on transit motorists to prevent them from using smaller local roads to bypass queues. ASFINAG has released a traffic forecast calendar, noting that high risk periods include Fridays, weekends, public holidays, and the summer months from May to October.
In response to these long-term road challenges, the Brenner Base Tunnel project aims to provide a high-speed rail alternative, connecting Innsbruck to South Tyrol in 25 minutes. While the project was initially targeted for a 2028 opening, the official commissioning date has shifted to 2032. Further delays are possible due to ongoing political disagreements in Germany regarding the construction of feeder lines in the Bavarian Inntal region.
