Brenner Pass transit traffic reaches critical limits

The Brenner Pass, a critical Alpine transit route connecting Austria and Italy, is facing extreme pressure due to increasing road traffic. At a conference in Bolzano, environmental organizations including CIPRA International and CIPRA South Tyrol called for a European-level solution to shift freight from roads to railways.

Participants noted that traffic volume at the Brenner exceeds all other Alpine crossings combined. While low toll fees provide economic advantages for Italian businesses, local leaders and environmentalists warn that the rising volume of heavy goods vehicles is causing unacceptable damage to public health, the environment, and local quality of life. Experts suggest that sustainable management requires coordinated policy decisions from Brussels, Rome, and Munich to implement a meaningful transport transition.
