BRICS leaders adopt economic declaration at New Delhi summit
At the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, leaders emphasized the group's role as a platform for cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries. Chinese President Xi Jinping described the mechanism as the world's most influential platform for such cooperation, noting its 20-year history of addressing global challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.
The summit resulted in a 140-paragraph declaration covering global economic governance, development finance, and cross-border payments. While the group has expanded, the declaration focused on areas of possible cooperation rather than attempting to replace existing institutions like the IMF, World Bank, or WTO.
Despite the broad agreement on economic agendas, the bloc faces challenges in reconciling diverse geopolitical interests among its members. The summit did not result in the creation of a common currency or a new financial institution, highlighting the tension between the group's growing economic weight and its members' differing foreign policy positions.
