BRICS leaders demand UN and global governance reforms at New Delhi summit

At their 18th summit in New Delhi, BRICS leaders adopted the New Delhi Declaration, calling for a profound restructuring of the United Nations and Bretton Woods institutions. The bloc, which has expanded to 11 members, is demanding more equitable geographic representation within UN secretariats and leadership positions, arguing that current global governance is stuck in an outdated order.

The declaration specifically targets Article 101 of the UN Charter to address the persistent under-representation of developing nations in decision-making roles. Leaders highlighted that key positions remain concentrated among a small number of states, which they claim undermines the legitimacy of the multilateral system.

On geopolitical issues, the group called for maximum restraint in the Middle East and advocated for dialogue and diplomacy regarding the war in Ukraine. The bloc also expressed firm opposition to the forced displacement of populations in Gaza and reaffirmed support for a two-state solution. Economically, BRICS criticized unilateral sanctions and trade barriers that hinder global commerce, signaling a push toward a multipolar world order.
