BRICS alliance emerges as a geopolitical voice for the Global South

The BRICS alliance is increasingly positioning itself as a significant geopolitical counterweight to Western economies and a primary voice for the Global South. Following the recent summit in New Delhi, analysts note that the group now represents approximately 50% of the world's population and between 40% and 45% of global GDP.

Former diplomat Sudhir T. Devre highlighted that the group has evolved beyond its original five members to become a platform for nations that often lack a global stage, allowing them to advocate for their own interests rather than acting in opposition to any specific bloc.

Economist Andrés Solimano noted that the expansion of the group—which now includes partners such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates—strengthens its distinction from the G7. The alliance emphasizes economic interdependence and seeks to establish development priorities that reflect the needs of emerging economies.
