BRICS global influence and economic role

Overview

The BRICS bloc continues to expand its geopolitical and economic influence, positioning itself as a primary voice for the Global South and a competitor to Western-led international orders. During a BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for increased unity among Global South nations to promote stability, asserting that their collective rise is a “primary driver of global multipolarity.” To bolster this, Xi proposed five initiatives focusing on artificial intelligence, digital industries, smart manufacturing, trade facilitation, and science and technology talent development.

Strategically, the group is working to transition from being rule-followers to “rule-makers” in the global economy by increasing its influence within major international institutions like the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank. Key efforts include the establishment of the New Development Bank in Shanghai and the creation of payment systems designed to bypass the US dollar.

Recent developments indicate increasing economic integration, though trade flows remain highly asymmetrical with China at the center. In 2025, China exported $523 billion to ten of the eleven BRICS members, maintaining significant bilateral trade with India, Russia, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, and Brazil. Notably, Brazil and Russia both maintained trade surpluses with China, exporting $100 billion and $124 billion respectively.

To mitigate economic vulnerabilities and reduce reliance on the US dollar and Northern Hemisphere exchanges, discussions have emerged regarding the potential creation of a BRICS grain exchange. This would allow major producers like Brazil to gain more control over commodity pricing and bypass geopolitical risks associated with the current global financial system.
