BRICS ministers adopt Indore Declaration on agricultural cooperation

Under India’s 2026 BRICS presidency, agriculture ministers from the BRICS bloc met in Indore for a five‑day summit that concluded with the unanimous adoption of the “Indore Declaration”. The declaration emphasizes food and nutrition security, farmer welfare, climate‑resilient and sustainable farming, and enhanced agricultural trade.

The ministers announced a suite of new institutional mechanisms, all coordinated by India: a Global Forum on Farmers' Rights in Seed Systems, the BRICS AGRIN Network for inputs and genetic resources, a proposed BRICS Grain Exchange to improve food‑grain trade, Centres of Excellence in agroecology and regenerative agriculture, and a Digital Agriculture Network to promote AI, IoT and geospatial tools. Coordination will be handled by institutions such as the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, IIT Delhi and the Indian Institute of Farming Systems Research.

Around 100 delegates, including roughly 60 foreign representatives, participated. The BRICS grouping, which together accounts for about 42 % of global agricultural land and food‑grain production and represents nearly half of the world’s population, presented the summit as a collective effort to strengthen food security and support small and marginal farmers worldwide.
