Brightline files for bankruptcy amid U.S. rail challenges

Brightline, a private Florida rail company, recently filed for bankruptcy due to insufficient revenue to cover its debts. Despite this, the company continues to operate its service between Miami and Orlando and maintains plans to launch a high-speed line in California, intended to connect Las Vegas to Rancho Cucamonga with trains reaching 200 mph.

The United States currently lacks passenger trains that meet the global high-speed definition of traveling at least 150 mph for extended trips, a contrast to nations like Japan, France, and China. Experts suggest this disparity is driven by a lack of government resources and funding. Historically, U.S. government support has been directed toward the interstate highway system and air traffic infrastructure rather than rail, influenced by the needs of a growing post-WWII nation and powerful interests in the auto, oil, and airline industries.
