Brightline high-speed rail financial restructuring
Overview
Certain parent entities of the Brightline high-speed rail service filed for prearranged Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New Jersey to facilitate a financial restructuring. The company is managing approximately $5.5 billion in debt, having lost more than $2 billion since 2017.
To address this debt, Brightline reached a restructuring agreement to secure $490 million in new capital. This funding consists of $350 million in new junior debt and $140 million in additional senior debt. Assured Guaranty has committed to providing up to $248 million in financing, while other stakeholders have agreed to provide $258 million in post-petition funding during the bankruptcy process.
Despite the filings by parent entities, Brightline Trains Florida—the operator of the Miami-to-Orlando service—has not filed for Chapter 11. Consequently, train operations are expected to continue without interruption. While the company faces debt pressures from high infrastructure costs, it reported that ridership grew 14% and revenue increased 17% year-to-date through August 2026.
Brightline maintains plans to expand service to Tampa, add a station in Cocoa, and launch a high-speed line in California intended to connect Las Vegas to Rancho Cucamonga with speeds reaching 200 mph. The company’s bankruptcy comes amid broader discussions regarding the lack of high-speed passenger rail in the United States compared to nations like Japan, France, and China.
