Brindisi environmental groups protest tree removals

Environmental associations in Brindisi, including Legambiente, WWF, and Italia Nostra, have issued a formal protest against the ongoing removal of trees in the city. The groups claim that the management of the city's arboreal heritage is being handled poorly, characterized by what they describe as “hasty removals without a strategy.”

Specific criticism was directed at the felling of a healthy 20-meter pine tree during heavy rain, as well as the removal of approximately 15 eucalyptus trees related to infrastructure projects such as the shuttle and railway link. The associations argue that using public safety as an excuse to remove trees without an immediate replacement strategy is “short-sighted and ecologically unsustainable.” They have called for better maintenance and a more cohesive strategy to prevent Brindisi from becoming a “grey city.”
