Brindisi environmental protests over tree removals

Overview

Environmental associations in Brindisi, including Legambiente, WWF, and Italia Nostra, have launched a formal protest against the city’s ongoing tree removal operations. The groups criticized the management of urban forestry, describing the actions as “hasty removals without a strategy.”

Specific grievances include the felling of a healthy 20-meter pine tree during heavy rain and the removal of roughly 15 eucalyptus trees linked to railway and shuttle infrastructure projects. Protesters argued that citing public safety to justify removals without an immediate replacement plan is “short-sighted and ecologically unsustainable,” warning that the lack of a cohesive strategy could turn Brindisi into a “grey city.”
