Italy healthcare system faces staffing shortages and rising violence

Italy's healthcare system is facing significant operational challenges, including staffing shortages, rising violence against medical personnel, and funding adjustments.

In Calabria, socio-health workers (OSS) have protested in Catanzaro, citing a mismatch between available qualified personnel and actual hospital needs due to bureaucratic delays. Similarly, in Trebisacce, local authorities have called for urgent nursing staff for radiology services to prevent service suspensions.

Violence in emergency departments is a growing concern. Recent incidents include attacks at San Marco Hospital in Catania and the Galatina hospital in Lecce, where an individual used an extinguisher to cause damage. These events have prompted calls from unions and health authorities for increased security and preventive measures.

On the financial and recruitment front, the Puglia region has allocated 24 million euros to bolster its 118 emergency service and attract doctors. In Rome, a major recruitment drive is underway to hire 268 nurses across various local health agencies. Additionally, reports indicate that in 2024, hundreds of billions of euros in direct taxes were utilized to fund national healthcare and social assistance.

In a positive development for Naples, the Asl Napoli 2 Nord reported high participation in a recent recruitment competition for emergency medicine specialists, helping to fill critical vacancies in areas like Ischia.
