Violence against Italian prison and security workers

Overview

A series of violent assaults against prison officers, security workers, and healthcare professionals has been reported across several Italian facilities and public service sectors. Following an incident in Busto Arsizio, prison unions declared a national emergency regarding staff safety, calling for increased personnel, better equipment, and structural reforms.

In the penitentiary system, violence has intensified. In Reggio Emilia, an officer sustained facial traumas after being assaulted by an inmate with martial arts training. In Cavadonna, Syracuse, the Osapp union reported that officers were threatened with sharpened sewing scissors during routine searches. In Saluzzo, a high-security inmate linked to the Sacra Corona Unita crime syndicate attacked a female police commissioner serving as deputy warden.

Violence against frontline workers has also expanded within the healthcare sector. In San Severino, a doctor sustained eyebrow injuries after a man threw a mobile phone at them during an encounter at a first-aid point. In Cosenza, a doctor at the Annunziata hospital emergency room suffered head trauma during an assault. The Order of Physicians, Surgeons and Dentists of Cosenza stated that attacking healthcare workers is “an attack on the community’s right to care.”

Other incidents include an ambulance crew being targeted in Pescara and a violent outburst in Bagheria. In Abruzzo, Diomede Branchesi remains in a coma after being punched while intervening in a dispute in Fossacesia. In Calabria, security worker Antonio Perrotta died following a brawl in Sangineto. In response, the Associazione Italiana Sicurezza Sussidiaria has called for legislative changes to grant security staff the status of public service officials.
