Brisbane City Council pursues tougher penalties after dog attack on jogger
The Brisbane City Council has escalated legal action against a dog owner following a violent attack on a jogger in Chermside. Ajay Malik, a 37-year-old real estate agent, was critically injured by two dogs while running through 7th Brigade Park. Malik sustained serious injuries to his face and arms and remains in critical condition at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
While the Council initially issued a destruction order for the dogs, it has since withdrawn that order to pursue more severe penalties under Queensland’s Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008. By escalating the case, authorities can seek higher punishments, including fines of up to $120,890 or up to two years of imprisonment, which exceed the limits of local law alone.
The two dogs, described as bulldog crosses, are currently being held securely by the Council. The owner, Layla Evans, has been given a period to respond to a proposed dangerous dog declaration. Meanwhile, Malik’s family has launched a $300,000 fundraising campaign to assist with his long physical and emotional recovery.
