Brisbane dog attack and investigation
Overview
A 37-year-old man, identified as real estate agent Ajay Malik, was hospitalized in critical condition after being mauled by two bulldog-cross dogs while running in Chermside's Seventh Brigade Park. Queensland Police were forced to discharge firearms to subdue the animals; one dog was euthanized and the second was located at a residence in Wavell Heights.
Following the attack, authorities discovered the body of a 48-year-old man in nearby bushland. While the deceased was known to sleep rough in the area, Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham stated that due to the state of decomposition, investigators cannot rule out the involvement of the same dogs in the man's death. A post-mortem indicated the man died on the same day as the attack on Mr. Malik.
In response to the incident, the Brisbane City Council has escalated legal action against the dog owner, Layla Evans. While the Council initially issued a destruction order for the dogs, it has since withdrawn that order to pursue more severe penalties under Queensland’s Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008. This escalation allows authorities to seek higher punishments, including fines of up to $120,890 or up to two years of imprisonment. Ms. Evans has been given a period to respond to a proposed dangerous dog declaration. Meanwhile, a fundraising campaign has been established to assist Mr. Malik with his medical and rehabilitation expenses.
