United Kingdom declines to join Canada-led defence bank
The United Kingdom has declined to join the Canada-led Defence, Security and Resilience Bank (DSRB), opting instead to pursue its own initiative, the Multilateral Defence Mechanism (MDM). The decision follows months of negotiations between Ottawa and London regarding the integration or merger of the two programs.
Disagreements reportedly centered on several key issues, including the location of headquarters, rules for future membership, and the level of joint procurement. While the DSRB focuses on supporting defence industries and supply chains through sovereign lending, the UK-led MDM aims to accelerate investment and reduce procurement costs by pooling demand across NATO allies.
Despite the divergence in institutional paths, both governments issued a joint statement expressing a commitment to work in close partnership. They agreed to develop a framework of cooperation to ensure the two distinct but complementary institutions can support each other regarding strategic financing challenges and emerging industrial priorities.
