British Columbia wildfire crisis forces evacuations for hundreds of properties

British Columbia wildfires evacuations lightning strikes Pear Lake

More than 33,000 lightning strikes across British Columbia last week have ignited 87 active wildfires, including four that started in the past 24 hours. Provincial officials reported that 600 properties are under evacuation orders and 5,700 properties are under alerts. Major fires include the Ainslie Creek, Brunswick Creek, Matthew Creek and Tower Creek 2 fires near Kimberley, which have prompted multiple evacuation orders and alerts.

The Pear Lake wildfire, discovered on July 17 and suspected to be lightning‑caused, is burning about 30 hectares southwest of Clinton. The Thompson‑Nicola and Squamish‑Lillooet regional districts issued evacuation orders for Downing Provincial Park, campground areas and numerous residences along Pear Lake Road and Pavilion‑Clinton Road, and an evacuation alert for roughly 38 properties in Electoral Area E. Emergency Support Services have been set up in Clinton to assist evacuees. Forests Minister Ravi Parmar and Emergency Management Minister Kelly Greene emphasised the need for residents to be prepared with grab‑and‑go bags and to conserve water amid worsening drought conditions.
