British Columbia mountain destinations receive first winter snow

Several popular winter destinations across British Columbia, including Mount Washington Alpine Resort, Sun Peaks Resort, and Grouse Mountain, have received their first snowfall of the season. Meteorologists noted that the freezing level dropped to approximately 1,200 metres above sea level over the weekend, bringing fresh powder to various regions such as Vancouver Island, the Sea to Sky corridor, and the Thompson-Okanagan.

In response to the changing weather, Comox Valley Search and Rescue has issued a warning to outdoor enthusiasts. They noted that while valley conditions may still feel like autumn, mountain trails in areas like Strathcona Provincial Park are experiencing rapid changes due to snow, ice, and reduced daylight.

Search and rescue officials urge hikers to check mountain forecasts, carry essential gear such as warm layers and traction devices, and bring headlamps for shorter daylight hours. They also advise leaving trip plans with others and carrying sufficient supplies to remain sheltered in the event that weather conditions prevent helicopter rescues.
