Canada municipal elections see diverse candidate priorities

Various municipal election activities are underway across Canada, with candidates and community groups focusing on diverse local issues. In British Columbia, a record 23 Filipino-Canadian candidates are running for municipal positions, including 13 for council and 10 for school boards.

In Kimberley, economic developer Schaun Goodeve is urging candidates to prioritize coordinated emergency response plans for businesses, citing gaps in communication during recent wildfire evacuations. Meanwhile, in Abbotsford, seven candidates have signed a letter requesting that the city delay the appointment of a new city manager until after the October 17 election to allow the incoming council to make the decision.

Other regional developments include the Canadian Federation of University Women hosting sessions to support female leadership in Stratford, and candidate forums being organized in Clearwater, Barriere, and Williams Lake to facilitate voter engagement. In Lachute, municipal leaders met with provincial election candidates to discuss infrastructure, healthcare, and regional funding priorities.
