British Columbia reports 776 toxic drug deaths in first half of 2026

Preliminary data from the BC Coroners Service indicates that 776 people died from toxic drugs in British Columbia during the first half of 2026. In June 2026 alone, 138 deaths were recorded, averaging approximately 4.6 deaths per day.

Demographic data shows that 75% of the decedents were male, and 68% of those who died were between the ages of 30 and 59. The Fraser and Vancouver Coastal health authorities reported the highest numbers, accounting for 52% of all deaths so far this year, with 206 and 200 deaths respectively.

Most deaths, 81%, occurred indoors, with 53% taking place in private residences. Regarding substance detection, fluorofentanyl was found in 67% of cases undergoing expedited testing, followed by cocaine (55%), fentanyl (53%), and methamphetamine (52%). Smoking remains the most common method of consumption at 68%.
