Overview

British Columbia continues to manage an ongoing toxic drug crisis characterized by high mortality rates. Preliminary data from the BC Coroners Service indicates that 776 people died from toxic drugs during the first half of 2026. In June 2026 alone, 138 deaths were recorded, averaging approximately 4.6 deaths per day. This brings the total death toll since the crisis was declared in April 2016 to 18,655.

Demographic data for the first half of 2026 shows that 75% of decedents were male, and 68% of those who died were between the ages of 30 and 59. Most deaths, 81%, occurred indoors, with 53% taking place in private residences. The Fraser and Vancouver Coastal health authorities reported the highest numbers, accounting for 52% of all deaths so far this year, with 206 and 200 deaths respectively.

Smoking remains the most common method of consumption at 68%. Toxicology reports indicate a high prevalence of synthetic opioids and stimulants. Across the province, fluorofentanyl was detected in 67% of cases undergoing expedited testing, followed by cocaine (55%), fentanyl (53%), and methamphetamine (52%).

Regional data highlights significant impact in the Interior Health region, which recorded 31 deaths in June. Within the Okanagan specifically, Kelowna has reported 37 deaths so far this year, followed by Kamloops with 17 and Vernon with 11. Fentanyl remains a primary factor in the region, detected in more than two-thirds of overdose deaths.

In response to the crisis, the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills, in collaboration with health authorities, has updated overdose prevention and response guidelines for the 2026-27 academic year. These guidelines for public post-secondary institutions focus on educating campus security and staff, managing nasal naloxone supplies, and establishing emergency contact protocols.
