British Columbia Ends Rural Healthcare Incentive, Union Cites Staffing Risks
The Provincial Rural Retention Incentive (PRRI), a monetary bonus of up to $2,000 per quarter (maximum $8,000 a year) for healthcare workers in 74 rural British Columbia communities, is scheduled to end on September 30, 2026. The program, launched on April 1 2024, includes towns such as Quesnel.
Lynn Bueckert, secretary and business manager of the Hospital Employees’ Union, warned that the termination could reduce the flow of new staff to rural hospitals and exacerbate existing shortages. She said the incentive “was a draw to get people to come to these communities” and noted that, amid a tight economy, workers might leave for higher‑pay positions elsewhere.
The union is urging residents to contact their MLAs and to sign a petition on heu.org to try to preserve the program, emphasizing that stable staffing is essential for patient care and community health.
