BC nurses strike pauses, mediation begins

Overview

The British Columbia Nurses’ Union (BCNU) widened its province‑wide strike to Vancouver Island on 12 July, setting up picket lines at Victoria General Hospital, Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital. Union president Adriane Gear reiterated that more than 2,300 intimidation or coercion complaints have been logged since the action began on 2 July and noted that essential and emergency services have been maintained. The union also filed an unfair‑labour‑practice application with the BC Labour Relations Board and criticised the appointment of special mediators Vince Ready and Amanda Rogers on 11 July as insufficient to restore trust.

On 13 July the BCNU announced it would halt all picketing at the end of the day while entering mediated talks with the Health Employers’ Association of British Columbia. Gear expressed “cautious optimism,” saying mediation offers an opportunity to move negotiations forward. The core demands remain a meaningful wage increase, improved staffing levels, protection from workplace violence and broader health‑system reforms. The provincial government and the Health Employers’ Association continue to stress patient safety, while the union maintains that essential health services will remain operational throughout the mediation process.
