British suspect captured in Ecuador for Colombian model's suitcase murder

Colombian model Natalia Villalba, 33, was found dead inside a gray suitcase in a temporary apartment in the Chicó neighbourhood of north Bogotá. Forensic analysis by the National Institute of Legal Medicine concluded that she died from a blunt‑force injury to the head and that her body had been dismembered and placed in the suitcase, with the perpetrator leaving the shower open to speed decomposition.

The primary suspect is British citizen Matthew Ashley Foster‑Smith, a former medical doctor who previously served a two‑year prison term for stalking his ex‑girlfriend in the United Kingdom. After an Interpol red notice, he was arrested at Quito's international airport in Ecuador and later extradited to Colombia. Colombian authorities allege he entered the apartment on 17 June, moved linens to the laundry area, and left the next day, after which the victim’s body was discovered by a cleaning worker. He has been charged with aggravated femicide, concealment of a body and evidence tampering. Foster‑Smith denies the accusations, claiming he was in a pub and later ate ice‑cream in Bogotá on the day of the murder. The case has heightened public concern over femicide rates in Colombia.
