Bogotá suitcase homicide – suspect charged in Colombia

Overview

Colombian prosecutors continue to build the case against 46‑year‑old British national Matthew Ashley Foster‑Smith, a former doctor with prior stalking convictions, accused of the aggravated femicide of model Natalia Villalba. Villalba’s body was discovered inside a grey suitcase in a short‑term rental in Bogotá’s Chapinero district on 22 June 2026; investigators say the killing occurred on 18 June.

Forensic analysis confirmed a blunt‑force head injury as the cause of death, dismemberment of the body, and that the perpetrator left the shower open to accelerate decomposition before sealing the remains in the suitcase.

After an Interpol Red Notice, Foster‑Smith fled to Ecuador via the Rumichaca crossing, using false identities. He was detained at Quito’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport on 27 June, expelled on the night of 29 June, and transferred to El Dorado International Airport, where a Bogotá judge received him.

On 1 July, Foster‑Smith was formally charged in Colombia with aggravated femicide, obstruction of justice and body concealment. During the hearing he claimed he had been kidnapped, drugged and beaten—a story investigators dismissed. Prosecutors allege he used chemical agents to subdue Villalba, moved her linens to the laundry on 17 June, left the apartment the next day, and then placed the dismembered body in the suitcase. They also say he financed his flight by deceiving banks while portraying himself as a crime victim.

Friends describe Villalba as a graphic designer who worked as a rideshare driver, model, promoter and spa employee, and note past contacts with a U.S. citizen and a British citizen, though no further suspects have been identified. The case has revived public concern over Colombia’s femicide rates. Extradition proceedings are complete, and Bogotá’s mayor reiterated the commitment to bring the perpetrator to justice. Investigators underscore ongoing cooperation among Colombian, Ecuadorian, British and Interpol authorities.
