British Toddler Dies After Hotel Pool Accident in Canary Islands

A one‑year‑old British child was found unconscious floating in the pool of a hotel complex in Lajares, northern Fuerteventura, on 15 June. Emergency responders revived the toddler at the scene and transferred her by medical helicopter to the Materno Infantil University Hospital on Gran Canaria, where she was placed in paediatric intensive care.

Despite stabilisation and intensive treatment, the child suffered irreversible neurological damage and died several days later. Authorities reported that the incident triggered a coordinated emergency response involving advanced‑life‑support ambulances, local police, fire services and a medicalised helicopter.

An investigation by the Civil Guard, overseen by a local court, is ongoing. Sebastian Quintana, president of the maritime‑safety organisation Canarias 1500 Km de Costa, urged parents to keep constant supervision of young children near water, stating: “I would like to take this opportunity to remind mothers and fathers of the need to constantly watch over little children and get into the water with them.”
