Catalonia drowning deaths rise, Spain
Entities: Catalonia · children · Baix Empordà · Tarragona province · Generalitat de Catalunya
Overview
The wave of water‑related fatalities that began in mid‑June 2026 across Spain has continued to climb. Early incidents included a six‑year‑old boy who drowned in a hotel pool in Calella on 19 July and a 78‑year‑old woman who died in a community pool in Sant Vicenç de Montalt, bringing Catalonia’s pool‑related death toll to eight. Beach deaths added to the count, such as a 76‑year‑old French tourist who collapsed while swimming at Castelló d’Empúries, raising the region’s total water‑related fatalities to 23. In Andalusia, a two‑year‑old girl died in a bathtub in Alora on 3 July, the third child death in the province within a month, following earlier drownings in Antas and on Mallorca.
By early August, Catalonia’s Civil Protection agency reported a sharp rise, recording 29 drowning deaths and 55 injuries across beaches, pools and inland waters – well above the previous year’s totals. Emergency services logged 2,044 calls to 112, relating to 1,310 incidents, with Barcelona accounting for the highest number of alerts. Children and older adults remain the most vulnerable groups.
A further update on 1 August confirmed that the death toll had reached 35, a 32 % increase over the same period in 2025. Tarragona province accounted for 18 of the deaths, while the Baix Empordà comarca recorded the second‑highest number of emergency calls (277). Barcelona alone logged 869 calls to the 112 line, and total emergency calls have now exceeded 2,000. Authorities continue to urge constant adult supervision, use of designated swimming areas, adherence to safety markings, and immediate calls to 112 for any sign of distress. Psychologists and additional ambulances have been deployed to support affected families.
