Kosovo leaders seek law amendments following Specialized Chambers verdict
Political tension in Kosovo has escalated following the first-instance verdict by the Specialized Chambers in The Hague against former KLA leaders Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi, and Jakup Krasniqi. Prime Minister Albin Kurti has condemned the ruling, describing it as legally, morally, and historically inaccurate, while emphasizing the need to distinguish between allegations and proven facts.
In response, the opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) has initiated a proposal to amend the law establishing the Specialized Chambers. The proposed changes include capping maximum sentences at 15 years and allowing for presidential pardons. Fatmir Limaj has urged the government to take concrete legislative steps, asserting that such amendments could be achieved with 31 votes in the Assembly.
Legal experts and the Specialized Chambers themselves have raised concerns. The Chambers stated they have not been consulted on the legislative initiative, and experts warn that any amendments must not violate Kosovo's international obligations under the Constitution. Meanwhile, the Kosovo Assembly has expressed formal concern through a declaration supported by 99 deputies.
