Brittany sees historic rise in medical interns and junior doctors
Medical training capacities in Brittany are seeing a significant increase, with the medical faculties of Brest and Rennes reporting a 16.2% rise in the number of interns over the past year. This growth is attributed to the abolition of the 'numerus clausus' system implemented in 2020.
For the 2026-2027 academic year, 516 new interns will begin training in the region. Additionally, starting in November 2026, 137 'junior doctors' specializing in general medicine will be deployed across Brittany. Of these, 118 will work alongside university-trained general practitioners to provide local care. More than two-thirds of these placements are located in priority sectors or areas identified as needing additional healthcare support.
