Medical training capacity increases in Brittany
Overview
In the Brittany region of France, medical training capacities have experienced a significant increase. Medical faculties in Brest and Rennes reported a 16.2% rise in the number of interns over the past year, a growth attributed to the 2020 abolition of the ‘numerus clausus’ system.
For the 2026-2027 academic year, 516 new interns are scheduled to begin training in the region. Furthermore, starting in November 2026, 137 junior doctors specializing in general medicine will be deployed across the area. More than two-thirds of these placements are designated for priority sectors or regions identified as requiring additional healthcare support.
