Brno court sentences man to 16 years for attempted murder and robbery

A 46-year-old man, David Žaloudek, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison by the Brno Regional Court for attempted murder, robbery, theft, and violation of domestic freedom. The sentencing follows a brutal attack in mid-September last year in a town in the Brno region.

Žaloudek targeted the home of an elderly man, nearly 80 years old, after hearing rumors of his wealth while at a pub. The defendant tied the victim up and locked him in a cellar, causing brain hemorrhaging and other injuries. The victim survived only by managing to chew through his restraints and calling for help.

Judge Miloš Žďárský noted that the survival of the victim was a miracle, describing the attack as an act of brutal violence. While the prosecution initially sought a nine-year sentence for robbery, the court upgraded the charges to attempted murder in the strictest qualification, noting the defendant acted with intent to cover up the robbery.
