Brno greenlights new bridge and roundabout to ease traffic

The Brno city council approved an investment to replace the existing narrow footbridge at the Riviéra swimming area with a new, four‑metre wide bridge over the Svratka River. The structure will be built about 34 m upstream, improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Project documentation and land‑rights work will begin in 2026, with construction targeted for the first half of 2028 and a total cost estimated at 48 million CZK.

In a related move, the council agreed to a land‑exchange with ABB to acquire parcels needed for a larger roundabout on Vienna Street, shifting the over‑burdened current junction a short distance downstream. Councilor Jiří Oliva noted the swap will enable the new roundabout, while transport councillor Petra Kratochvíl said it will “decongest the bypass under the bridge and improve flow to highway D1”. The upgrade aims to relieve traffic jams near the Futurum shopping centre and improve connections to the D1 motorway.
