Brno water utility reports continued drop in groundwater levels

The Brno Waterworks and Sewerage (BVK) reported that groundwater levels at the Březeá spring fell by almost four metres in 2023, reaching near‑threshold values because of below‑average rainfall. The spring provides 83 % of the city’s drinking water, serving about 436 000 residents in Brno and nearby villages, while the remaining supply comes from the Vír reservoir.

Overall production rose marginally to 30.4 million m³, with a 10 % network loss. BVK highlighted a persistent risk to water security if the drought continues, despite recent wetter years. The utility is modernising its sewage treatment, investing CZK 3.5 billion in a new sludge facility in Modřice, and plans to replace about 95 km of aging sewers older than 90 years.
