In late July 2026 Brno’s main water utility warned that groundwater at the Březeá spring – which provides about 83 % of the city’s drinking water – had fallen nearly four metres in 2023, reaching near‑threshold levels after a year of below‑average rainfall. Production rose only marginally to 30.4 million m³ and the utility continued its investment programme, including a CZK 3.5 billion sludge‑treatment plant and replacement of 95 km of ageing sewers. Czech authorities released water from the Vranov (35 million m³) and Nové Mlýny (30 million m³) reservoirs into the Dyje River, noting inflows were about 70 % below the long‑term average and that releases began unusually early, in mid‑March. Withdrawals from the Vír reservoir for potable use rose sharply to 6.2 million m³. Gas storage levels fell to 1.7 billion m³ – roughly 49 % of capacity – but officials assured diversified imports would keep winter deliveries secure. By early August the reservoir serving Brno‑region municipalities of Domašov, Rudka and Říčky ran dry for the first time since 1959. A local voluntary association organised tanker trucks, assisted by fire‑brigade crews, to deliver drinking water to about 1,400 customers, underscoring escalating pressure on the region’s water infrastructure. Economist Petr Bartoň warned that the ongoing drought across much of Europe will push up food and electricity prices in the Czech Republic, especially affecting agricultural production and fruit‑vegetable markets. Reduced water availability is expected to increase demand for air‑conditioning, adding pressure on electricity consumption. Czech gas storage facilities are only about 57 % full, the lowest level in fifteen years, after a winter of higher consumption and slower refilling.
