Czech drought worsens, Central Europe water strain

Overview

The drought that first crippled Czech water supplies in 2023 re‑emerged in August 2026, leaving several villages without tap water and forcing the use of tankers in the Brno region. While the shortage extends across Central Europe, affecting the Danube and the Paks nuclear plant in Hungary, Czech authorities have expanded emergency measures to the Labe and Odra river basins.

In the Labe basin, reservoir inflows have reached levels near historical minimums. To maintain river flows and dilute wastewater pollution, approximately 17 million cubic metres have been released from Labe basin reservoirs. In the Odra basin, water discharge from reservoirs is nearly five times the amount of incoming water, though officials state current reserves are sufficient to prevent water restrictions.

As the hydrological drought persists, environmental organizations have launched urgent appeals to protect aquatic life. The Czech Union for Nature Conservation (ČSOP) is seeking volunteers to rescue mussels at the Slapy Reservoir, where dropping water levels have left organisms stranded on exposed banks. In the Moravian Karst region, conservationists report massive ecological losses, noting that approximately 90 percent of the crayfish population in the Bílá Voda riverbed perished following a heatwave.

In response to these challenges, forestry organizations have begun implementing projects to restore natural water regimes and revitalize wetlands. In the Brdy region, Vojenské lesy a statky ČR (VLS) has worked to fill drainage ditches and modify forest roads across approximately 451 hectares to prevent rapid runoff. Additionally, Lesy České republiky completed a revitalization project for the Stupnický stream in the Jizbice Forest, using 413 wooden barriers to transform former drainage ditches back into functional wetlands and peatlands to protect rare peat spruce forests.
