Brno's Zbrojovka stadium plan blocked over 37‑metre height limit

Zbrojovka Brno intends to build a new football stadium on the former Lužánky site, with the contract specifying a height of 37 metres. The heritage department of the Czech Ministry of Culture warned that such a height would obstruct protected views of Brno’s historic centre and therefore cannot be approved.

City council sports councillor Tomáš Aberl said the ministry would likely permit a stadium of 28‑30 metres, but not the 35‑metre level already examined, and the city will now assess alternative heights between 31 and 34 metres. Zbrojovka’s spokesperson noted the ministry’s opinion is based on preliminary sketches and can be discussed. The dispute also touches on land‑price appraisals, with a risk that the sale could be deemed public support if prices differ.

The Lužánky site hosted the former stadium built between 1949 and 1953, which fell into disuse after 2001. The new project, valued at several billion Czech crowns, remains stalled pending a revised height proposal.
