Nirmal Purja and teammates killed in Broad Peak avalanche
An avalanche struck Broad Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram range on July 30‑31, 2026, wiping out a 10‑person international climbing expedition. All members, including renowned British‑Nepali mountaineer Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja, were killed. Recovery teams led by the Alpine Club of Pakistan, with support from the Pakistani military, British High Commission, the Nepalese embassy and other agencies, retrieved seven bodies initially and later eight, identifying climbers such as Purja, Chinese climber Wang Zhong and Nepali guides Nima Sherpa, Kilu Sherpa, Gyalu Sherpa, Pur Bahadur Gurung, Omani climber Nadhira Al Harthy and American Mallory Geis. Two climbers remain missing. The recovered bodies were moved to Broad Peak base camp, then air‑lifted to Skardu, transferred to a military hospital, and are to be flown to Islamabad before being sent to the United Kingdom, where Purja’s family will hold his funeral. Memorial services are also planned in his ancestral home in Myagdi and in Chitwan, Nepal.
