Overview

An avalanche on Broad Peak’s south-west face on 30 July 2026 struck a ten-member multinational expedition led by renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja. The expedition included climbers from Nepal, Pakistan, China, Oman, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

New details have emerged regarding the fatalities, confirming that the expedition leader, Nirmal Purja, and Kili Pemba Sherpa were among those killed. Witnesses reported hearing a “loud crack” before the avalanche swept down both sides of the peak. Drone footage later confirmed the presence of bodies with no apparent survivors.

Recovery operations, supported by the Alpine Club of Pakistan and the Pakistan Army, were frequently hampered by severe weather, difficult terrain, and the inability to use helicopters. Elite mountaineer Mingma Gyalje Sherpa abandoned a K2 expedition to lead a high-risk recovery mission. Rescuers faced additional danger when a second avalanche struck during the operation.

While initial efforts recovered several victims, including Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi, the Alpine Club of Pakistan reported that the final body—an American woman—was recovered following a three-week mission. The total fatalities include six climbers from Nepal, one from Pakistan, one from China, one from Oman, and one from the United States.

Commemorations have been held globally. In Kathmandu, Buddhist ceremonies honored the deceased, including Italian biologist Marco Di Marcello. The Juniper Fund has launched a five-year support plan and a $120,000 crowdfunding campaign to provide $4,000 annually to the families of the six deceased Nepalese workers.
