Broad Peak avalanche kills 10 climbers, including five Sherpas

An avalanche on Broad Peak, the world’s 12th-highest mountain, killed 10 climbers on July 30. The incident is being described as the deadliest alpine disaster in more than a decade.

Among the fatalities were five Sherpas and one Pakistani mountain guide. Several high-profile climbers were present during the event, including mountaineer Nirmal “Nims” Purja, Wang Zhong of China, Mallory Geis of the U.S., and Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy of Oman.

The Juniper Fund, a nonprofit dedicated to Nepali mountain workers, has launched a five-year support plan for the families of the six deceased workers. The organization has initiated a crowdfunding campaign with a goal of $120,000, aiming to provide each family with $4,000 annually for five years to assist with their recovery and stability.
