Mount Bromo forest fire expands to 60 hectares, several tourist routes shut
A forest and land fire broke out on Mount Bromo in East Java on 3 August 2026. Initial reports described a 10‑hectare blaze, but the Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB) later confirmed the fire had spread to about 60 hectares across the Probolinggo and Malang regencies.
Multiple agencies – the regional disaster mitigation agency (BPBD), the national park authority, the Indonesian military (TNI), police (Polri), the state forestry company Perhutani, volunteers and local residents – have been fighting the fire with manual tools, backpack sprayers and fire‑beating sticks. Because ground access is difficult on the steep crater slopes, drones are used for mapping and two water‑bombing helicopters were deployed. The operation also faces strong winds and dry vegetation.
To protect visitors, the Taman Nasional Bromo Tengger Semeru authority has temporarily closed the main tourist entrances at Kemplang, Coban Trisula and Senduro, while limited access remains through Cemoro Lawang and Wonokriti. No casualties have been reported, and firefighting efforts continue.
