Bromo wildfires trigger management reforms and protests

Overview

As of 18 September 2026, the wildfire crisis in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) has prompted calls for stricter management and sparked local protests.

Following the indefinite closure of the park to ensure visitor safety and firefighting effectiveness, the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism has urged TNBTS management to tighten standard operating procedures (SOP) to prevent future wildfires. To mitigate risks from human negligence, such as the use of flares for photography or improper cigarette disposal, the Ministry is encouraging the implementation of a daily visitor quota of 2,752 people and the strict enforcement of sanctions for violators.

In response to the ongoing closures, residents from eight buffer villages in the Tosari district of Pasuruan have staged a peaceful protest. Protesters are demanding the reopening of the Wonokitri entrance, arguing that the blanket closure is economically damaging. They are calling for a zone-based closure system that reflects actual fire risks rather than a total shutdown, and are requesting an immediate safety assessment of the Tosari-Wonokitri-Penajakan route.

Previously, the fires had consumed the Watangan Valley savanna and Teletubbies Hill before spreading toward Jemplang in Malang Regency. Authorities have maintained that visitors holding tickets for the period of 12–18 September 2026, or until the park reopens, are eligible for a full refund or a free reschedule for dates between 1 October and 31 December 2026.
