Mount Bromo tourism closed due to spreading 176-hectare wildfire
A major wildfire in Indonesia's Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park has spread to approximately 176 hectares, prompting the total closure of all tourist access points to Mount Bromo.
The fire, which began in the Bantengan Block on August 3, 2026, has been driven by strong winds and dry vegetation, spreading toward the Bukit B29 and Jantur Block areas. To manage the crisis, authorities have implemented a total suspension of tourism activities through all five major entry points, including Cemorolawang, Wonokitri, Jemplang, Coban Trisula, and Senduro. This closure is effective until further notice to ensure the safety of visitors, staff, and local residents, and to facilitate firefighting operations.
Firefighting efforts involve a joint team of agencies, including the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), local disaster management agencies (BPBD), and various military and police units. Operations include the use of two water-bombing helicopters and water-spraying drones. For tourists who have already purchased tickets via the online booking system, the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) authority is offering options to either reschedule their visit or request a full refund.
