Bronze Age Treasure Discovered Near Kojetín, Czech Republic
Archaeologists from the Archeologické centrum Olomouc uncovered a bronze‑age deposit dating to more than three thousand years ago while monitoring the Brno–Přerov railway modernization near the village of Kojetín in Moravia. The find was made on a former wetland area that had been briefly flooded; detector prospecting aided its discovery.
The deposit contains fragments of bronze working tools – eight deformed sickles, one complete sickle, a portion of a sword blade, ornamental pieces, three ingots and two unfinished items. Traseological analysis showed that most objects had been normally used before being placed and that several were deliberately damaged, likely with an axe or hammer, before burial. Researchers interpret the assemblage as a ritual deposition rather than a stockpile for later use. The find follows a previous rescue excavation at the same locality that revealed a large prehistoric settlement.
Lead archaeologists Vít Záhorák and Michael Kamarád described the assemblage as belonging to the “culture of burial fields.” Further laboratory work is underway to clarify the circumstances and significance of the deposition for understanding Bronze Age life in central Moravia.
