Brooklyn Bridge unlicensed vendors displace licensed merchants

Dozens of unlicensed vendors are operating illegally on the Brooklyn Bridge, selling souvenirs and food items such as fruit cups, magnets, and hats. The presence of these illicit hawkers has reportedly crowded out licensed merchants, including disabled veterans, who claim they are being unable to maintain their livelihoods.

While vending is prohibited on pedestrian walkways and bike lanes on New York City bridges, approximately 42 unauthorized sellers were observed on the span. Licensed vendors have expressed frustration with the situation, noting that police enforcement via small fines appears ineffective at deterring the activity, as the profits from illegal sales significantly outweigh the cost of the tickets.
