Brooklyn man killed after bag caught in NYC subway doors
A 57-year-old man, identified as Yaw Boahene, died Monday evening following a fatal accident at the Utica Avenue subway station in Brooklyn. Witnesses and investigators report that as Boahene was exiting a Manhattan-bound 'A' train during the evening rush hour, his shopping bag became caught in the closing doors.
The train subsequently pulled away from the platform, dragging Boahene between the cars and onto the tracks. Emergency medical services pronounced him dead at the scene. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Boahene using a cane and appearing unsteady on his feet as he approached the doors.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has suspended the train's crew pending an investigation. While modern subway trains are designed to stop if doors are obstructed, transit sources suggested that thin or flexible objects, such as a plastic bag, might not be substantial enough to trigger the system's safety sensors. The New York City Police Department and the Office of Chief Medical Examiner are continuing their investigation into the exact cause of death.
