New York City subway incidents
Overview
Two separate fatal incidents occurred on the New York City subway system within a short period.
On September 28, 57-year-old Yaw Boahene died at the Utica Avenue station in Brooklyn. Reports indicate his shopping bag became caught in the doors of a Manhattan-bound ‘A’ train, causing him to be dragged onto the tracks. The MTA has suspended the train crew pending an investigation into whether the bag was too thin to trigger safety sensors.
On September 30, a 25-year-old man, Jyrell Thomas, was charged with murder following an unprovoked stabbing on a southbound ‘J’ train near Woodhaven Boulevard in Queens. The victim, 59-year-old Mesias Lojano, was allegedly stabbed multiple times before being dragged from the train onto the platform. Thomas was apprehended by police after a pursuit.
