Brooklyn Public Library to host Machel Montano exhibition

The Brooklyn Public Library will host “Journey of a Soca King: The Exhibition” starting August 22 at its Central Library. Created by the Machel Montano Foundation for Greatness, the exhibit celebrates the five-decade career of Trinidadian Soca artist Machel Montano and his influence on Caribbean music.

On display will be various artifacts, including costumes, trophies, and vinyl records. Visitors can use a vinyl listening station to hear his music and watch video highlights from his career. The exhibition also highlights Montano’s personal ties to Brooklyn; he attended summer programming in the borough at age nine and lived on Utica Avenue during the mid-1990s.

In addition to the Central Library exhibit, programming will be held at various branches throughout Brooklyn’s Caribbean neighborhoods. On September 3, the library plans to project the documentary “Like Ah Boss: Journey of a Soca King” onto the facade of the Central Library building.
