Overview

The Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Library has opened ‘Journey of a Soca King: The Exhibition’, a tribute to the five-decade career of Trinidadian soca artist Machel Montano. Created by the Machel Montano Foundation for Greatness, the exhibit tracks Montano’s evolution from a child performer in Trinidad and Tobago to a global music icon.

Following a private preview attended by Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke, elected officials, and Montano’s family—including his mother and manager, Elizabeth ‘Lady’ Montano—the exhibition is now open to the public. It is scheduled to run through September 12, 2026.

On display are various archival items, including costumes, trophies, vinyl records, cassette tapes, and multi-track recording systems. These items highlight the technological shifts in music production throughout his career, which began in the early 1980s. The exhibit also explores the growth of soca music from its roots into a global cultural movement.

In addition to the Central Library, programming will be held at various library branches throughout Brooklyn’s Caribbean neighborhoods. The event is timed to coincide with the lead-up to the West Indian American Day Carnival in Brooklyn. On September 3, the library plans to project the documentary ‘Like Ah Boss: Journey of a Soca King’ onto the facade of the Central Library building.
